What does a Hummingbird and a Chamber have in common?

For the past 29 years, the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce has been a part of the life of a ruby-throated hummingbird and all birds like no other. It’s through the creation of the HummerBird Celebration held each year around mid-September. You don’t normally see the conservation aspect of a Chamber of Commerce along side economic development for a community. For the Rockport-Fulton community, the two go hand in hand. You see we are the Charm of the Texas Coast located just 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi on the coastline of Texas. To keep that charming feel in tack, we continually work to balance the development of the economy with the development of “tourism” and further yet to the development of “birding.” Whether that be supporting land acquisition for habitat preservation to encouraging native plants for backyards and all areas in between.

The adventure has been phenominal for the Chamber through the years. Not only have we been able to impact the economy during a slow economic period by visitors staying in hotels, RV parks, condos, beach homes, etc. along with eating in local restaurants, buying souvenirs and purchasing gas for their trip home but showing our community the importance of nature, the birds and protecting local natural resources so the future generations can enjoy. If you have never been to the Hummerbird Celebration Check it out online or better yet come join us we would love to show you the unique and beautiful find on the coast.

So how does a hummingbird reflect Chamber? We are often a unique breed of employees and volunteers working very hard at fast paces. We focus on many topics and trends and we love sweet things. Many Chamber Execs call me and ask how we are able to handle this. My answer is always “very delicately.” It is the right thing to do for our community and our Chamber. We truly embrace the “charm of the Texas coast.”
